GCP APPLIED SOLUTIONS
Global producer of building materials, coatings and specialty chemicals; publicly traded (GCP; NYSE), recently spun from 140-year-old W.R. GRACE, revenues of $1.4B, market capitalization in excess of $2.2B, 68 facilities in five continents, 2900 associates.
Challenge: Stand-up an independent, publicly-traded company while keeping key processes intact; drive double-digit profit and revenue growth of key division; spearhead acquisitions and divestitures. Initiate world-class processes in operations, supply chain and customer service.
As President, Specialty Building Materials (SBM) and Global Operations and Supply Chain Leader, Zain served as the Key Officer “standing up” the enterprise, launching at NYSE, and increasing market cap by 2x in 11 months. He accelerated 11 new product launches, 5 becoming “game changers” with a multi-generational growth pipeline; made 2 major acquisitions, delivering 20+% growth; divested an unprofitable division; course corrected unprofitable China and India entities, and restructured the organization reducing unnecessary units while investing in new operations globally.

Challenge: Frayed US brand and market presence; declining revenues over 3 years in US/Canada with 7 class-action lawsuits. 3 out of 4 key products non-performing in the US, organization plagued with morale issues.
As President & CEO, Zain instituted a 5-year strategic plan; led the integration of 4 disparate companies into one entity; formed a more collaborative, cohesive executive leadership team; and established the President’s Council to address key company issues.

PARKSON CORPORATION
Premier water and wastewater treatment equipment manufacturing company with over 50 years of experience and 25,000 installations; owned by Axel Johnson Family; annual revenue $85M with 150 associates.
Challenge: Unprofitable organization with stale brand and market presence; flat revenue growth with lowering margin and mercurial profitability. Margin erosion and warranty issues plagued organization without contemporary skills to meet challenges of new competitive landscape.
As President & CEO, Zain championed the efforts to grow market focused business units; acquired 3 new adjacent technologies; entered the Middle East and Southeast Asia markets; oversaw the construction of a Water Research Facility and LEED certified Water Campus HQ; developed an India Engineering Center; and reorganized the leadership team investing in talent and contemporary capabilities.

Challenge: Losing market share and declining margin in commoditizing, duopolistic, materials market in North America; low-cost alternatives from emerging competitors eroding profitability in Asia and Europe; unprepared team with poor commercial and strategic pricing skills to handle new market dynamics.
As Vice President/General Manager, Construction Materials and Systems, Zain was the Global P&L leader for $690M in sales, 85 countries, 10 plants in Asia, Europe and North America producing fine micron fiberglass, nonwoven fiberglass and polyester mats to roofing and gypsum wallboard OEMs. Expanded to Central & Eastern Europe (including Russia); acquired a new facility in China; refreshed 7 key products; developed Six Sigma based pricing process; and re-defined and energized a high performance, cross-functional team set up.
